Situated on the floor of the world-famous Great Rift Valley, Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano that last erupted in the 1800s. Located just 90km from Nairobi, it is the perfect location for an adventurous day trip out of the Kenyan capital.
Requiring a modest level of physical fitness, the 4-5 hour hike takes you to the very rim of the volcano crater for a glimpse out across the Great Rift Valley. The early portion of your hike takes you through land inhabited by wildlife such as buffalo, antelope, and even leopards, while the higher reaches are steep and require a good level of determination.
You'll complete your hike in time for lunch.
Optional Add-Ons
For those wanting to extend their city escape, you can continue on to Lake Naivasha for lunch at one of the lodges. You can then take a guided boat safari out on Lake Naivasha and pay a visit to the Crescent Island Sanctuary to walk with animals such as giraffes and antelope.
Alternatively, you could continue your day of adventure by instead detouring through Hell's Gate National Park to see its unique landscapes and enjoy some cycling or rock climbing.
